Hospitals are constantly on the lookout for new options to keep their facilities free from life-threatening infections and bacteria.
Dr. Udi Qimron of the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine has developed an efficient solution designed specifically for hospital facilities to keep them safe from potential bacterial threats.
There’s more. One liter of the growth medium will cost just a few dollars, making this new solution a potential game changer for health care facilities and buildings.
The new solution, based on specially designed bacteriophages, can alter the genetic makeup of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
“We have genetically engineered the bacteriophages so that once they infect the bacteria, they transfer a dominant gene that confers renewed sensitivity to certain antibiotics," explains Dr. Qimron.
The solution will be tested in pre-clinical animal trials to ensure its safety before being made available for wider use at hospitals. Once tested, the solution will be available in a bottle, easily added to a bucket or spray for easy cleaning.
