Standing employees reap health benefits without losing focus.
Workers using standing desks are just as productive as their counterparts who sit, says new research. Even while standing time increased between 73-90 minutes per day and sitting time fell between 64-100 minutes per day, the researchers found that worker productivity in metrics such as hold or call time was not affected. The study from the University of Sydney was performed over five months in an Australian call center and measured the productivity of around 30 participants.
While workers using the desks were not found to be more productive than their counterparts using traditional desks, those using the sit-stand configuration reported more energy over the course of the workday. The scientists note that the research helps back up the growing body of data showing that standing desks can help boost activity levels and reduce prolonged sitting, which has been shown to have significant health risks.
