Honeywell in collaboration with The Futurum Group recently released its third quarter Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) report. The quarterly report includes the Sentiment Index, a sampling of more than 750 global business leaders on their perception on achieving their environmental and sustainability goals over the past year and their expectations for the year ahead. These professionals are directly involved in the sustainability initiatives at their company, which must have at least 1,000 active employees. The latest survey collected responses during the second quarter of 2023.
Below are a few highlights from the report.
Seven in 10 surveyed companies said the political and regulatory environment has had a positive impact on their sustainability initiatives within the past 12 months.
According to respondents, for at least the next six months, sustainability goals will continue to top other corporate initiatives, which include digital transformation, financial performance, market growth, customer experience, business continuity, workforce/talent development, and security and trust.
Of the four sustainability categories considered in the ESI—energy evolution and efficiency, emissions reduction, pollution prevention, and circularity/recycling—energy evolution and efficiency continues to be the top priority for the next six months, a trend unchanged from the previous two quarters.
Between 88% and 94% of respondents said their organizations were successful, to various degrees, with their prior 12-month goals across the four sustainability categories. Between 70% and 77% of respondents are optimistic about their coming 12-month goals, as well as their 2030 goals, across the four categories.
In the report, 86% of respondents said their organization plans to increase its investments in sustainability, a 3% increase from the previous quarter. Specifically, 20% percent of respondents say their investment increase will be by 50% or more; 31% of respondents say the increase will be between 21% and 49%; and 35% of respondents say the increase will be up to 20%.
