How a German RE firm flipped an old pavilion into Platinum Smart Building Certification
In Hamburg, Germany, the Hammerbrooklyn. Digital Pavillon, a smart buildings project by Art-Invest Real Estate Management GmbH & Co. KG (Art-Invest Real Estate) recently received the Platinum designation from Smart Building Certification (Netherlands). The 7,300 sq meter innovation hub and office building was delivered to the community space Factory in mid-2021, and is the first building in Germany to achieve the certification.
“Reusing the American Expo Milan pavilion and enhancing it with state-of-the-art smart building technology, Art-Invest Real Estate has set new standards for sustainability and building intelligence in their Hammerbrooklyn. Digital Pavillon,” contends Nicholas White, head of operations and strategy at Smart Building Certification.
Smart Building Certification notes that its Platinum, Silver, Gold and Bronze designations promote well-being, sustainability, performance, innovation, health, and safety in the built environment by recognizing buildings that have smart technology infrastructure.
EDGE Olympic Amsterdam was the first building awarded the Platinum certification; Hammerbrooklyn. Digital Pavillon now joins this league of world-class smart buildings.
At the heart of Hamburg’s digital innovation district, the Factory Hammerbrooklyn building is a home for interdisciplinary collaboration between the city’s creative, academic, tech and industrial communities. The goal of the pavilion retrofit was to create a flexible, future-proof smart building infrastructure capable of supporting the maximum use cases for all stakeholders.
In May 2021, Factory Hammerbrooklyn opened its doors to a community of changemakers, celebrating the occasion with a full-day virtual event program, bringing together the brightest minds from Hamburg, Berlin and beyond, for lively discussion, exchange and entertainment. The building pushes innovation by involving Factory’s members, as well as the Hammerbrooklyn Youth Innovation Centre.

According to a press statement, the Hammerbrooklyn. Digital Pavillon project received an overall PLATINUM rating from Smart Building Certification with individual high scores in all 6 areas of measurement, including: 1) Building usage; 2) Building performance; 3) Health, safety and security; 4) Building environment; 5) User experience and collaboration; and 6) Connectivity and integrative design.
Points were also awarded for innovation initiatives such as cooperation with universities and research institutions. In the deployment, technologies were reportedly streamlined to decrease the amount of technologies required for simplicity of infrastructure, while still achieving maximum impact in effect.
